Prologue.
They were after me. The vampires. Ever since my first “encounter” with them, they had surprised me.
I’d always thought of them as soulless creatures of the night, but as it turns out, they do have souls. They suck them out of others.
I’d thought of them as parasites that needed to feed off of human blood, but you know what I found out? They didn’t need the blood to survive. What they needed was the life – the souls.
They had sharp fangs that would pierce your skin and suck your life out of you along with the blood. I had always assumed that a bite from the fangs of a vampire would turn you into one, but I’m still a human, aren’t I?
The vampires – they were less like humans and more like animals. No, worse. They were leeches. They’d use you and throw you away.
I speak from experience. And that’s exactly why they were after me. I knew too much.
Didn’t they see? I was the victim here. But, I guess, when it comes to vampires, no logic applies.
I kept going, and they kept coming after me. And their size kept increasing. Were they ever going to stop?
But it's not like I had a choice. All I could do was keep on running.
Till I hit a dead end. I didn’t know when the maze materialized, but it was there now. That could only mean one thing.
I woke up, panting, trying to catch my breath.
Another nightmare. I had been having these since I had caught on to the existence of vampires – which was, what, two weeks ago?
I looked around, noticing my surroundings. I was still in my very room. Still in my small, dark, and depressing room.
Very quietly, so I wouldn’t wake my parents up, I walked over to my closet and peered in. No one was there. It looked the same as it had last night.
Before you call this paranoia, let me tell you this: once, I’d woken up and coincidently caught sight of the color, red, in my closet. When I came closer and looked inside, there was someone there.
It was a man who looked to be thirty, but we all know, looks can not only be deceiving, they always are.
From what I could make out, he had red shining eyes and a bloody lip. Only later did I know that it wasn’t his blood.
He smiled at me, but it didn’t look pleasant any way you looked at it. And then, he disappeared into thin air. There was a slight breeze, and I felt a chill down my spine.
As long as they knew where you lived, you were in danger. No, it’s more like: once you crossed paths with a vampire, you were always in danger.
Fortunately for everyone, no one that I knew got hurt. Not till the Sydney Jackson "incident."
